FORD 10R80 TRANSMISSION CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT FILED

Several lawsuits have been filed in recent years regarding alleged problems with the Ford 10R80 transmission used in newer Ford F-150 pickup trucks; one of these lawsuits, filed in Illinois, was later partially dismissed. The F-150, Ford Ranger, Ford Mustang, Ford Expedition, and Lincoln Navigator are included in this complaint against the Ford 10R80 transmission.

The 2017+ models of those vehicles are covered by this new lawsuit, Daniel McCabe v. Ford Motor Company, which was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. It once again alleges that the 10R80 transmission used in each of those vehicles has a tendency to shift harshly, causing the vehicle to jerk, lunge, and hesitate when changing gears. A potentially life-threatening safety concern, according to the lawsuit, "common design and/or manufacturing defect in Ford's 10R80 transmissions," and "Ford has refused to recall or replace the defective transmissions."

The lawsuit also cites numerous Ford recalls as evidence that the 10R80 is indeed defective. These recalls include one for Ranger pickup trucks with gear shifter interlock issues, another for Ranger pickup trucks with gear shift indicators that falsely indicate that the vehicle is in park, and one for 2020 Ranger and F-150 pickup trucks with 10-speed automatic gearboxes.

According to this new lawsuit, Ford is fully aware of these problems with the 10R80 transmission yet nevertheless tells customers that it is functioning normally. The suit states: “Because of the defect, the class vehicles are likely to suffer serious damages and potentially catch fire if accidents occur, and there is an unreasonable and extreme risk of serious bodily harm or death to the vehicle’s occupants and others in the vicinity,”

It all sounds pretty serious, so if you own one of the following vehicles, be mindful:

  1. 2017 - 2022 Ford F-150

  2. 2017 - 2022 Ford Ranger

  3. 2017 - 2022 Ford Mustang

  4. 2017 - 2022 Ford Expedition

  5. 2017 - 2022 Lincoln Navigator
