New (again) Ford 360 Degree Rear View Camera Recall - Lemon Law

Ford hasn’t really dealt that well with a new law that requires functional back up cameras in all new vehicles. Back in 2021, we wrote about how the NHTSA was investigating several failures of those cameras and how quickly Ford issued a recall back then. Now, ANOTHER new recall has been announced to Ford dealerships to replace the 360-degree rearview cameras in nearly 170,000 of Ford vehicles.

The recall covers the following vehicles:

  • 2020-2023 Lincoln Aviator

  • 2018-2021 Lincoln Navigator

  • 2022-2023 Ford Transit

  • 2021 Ford Bronco

The backup cameras may not display a rearview images when the Ford vehicle is shifted into REVERSE (which is basically its entire purpose.). Instead, a driver may see a black or blue screen.

As of today, Ford has noted over 3,486 warranty reports regarding rearview camera failures, two alleged crashes but no reports of injuries.

Engineers at Ford now believe the backup camera failures can occur due to the image processing module software. In addition, there can be problems with the camera hardware and the wiring retention.

Here are the details from NHTSA, along with the recall acknowledgement here.

Rearview Camera Image May Not Display

Loss of the rearview camera image can reduce the driver's rear visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.
