Nearly 450,000 Kia Tellurides Recalled Over Rollaway Risk

446,000 SUVs with potentially partially engaged right front driveshafts and intermediate shafts are covered by a Kia Telluride recall.

This may result in the 2020–2024 Kia Tellurides rolling away, even with PARK's gear shifters engaged.

Until the SUVs are fixed, Kia is cautioning drivers in Telluride to always engage the parking brake.

As stated by Kia:

"The intermediate shaft and right front driveshaft may not be fully engaged due to suspected improper assembly by the supplier. Over time, partial engagement can cause damage to the intermediate shaft splines. Damaged shaft splines may result in unintended vehicle movement while in Park if the parking brake is not engaged."

Owners of Kia Tellurides should be alert for any power outages or grinding noises.

During routine data monitoring in April 2022, Kia discovered Telluride complaints regarding the SUVs' unintentional movements or transmissions that did not hold PARK.

Owners of Kia Tellurides also reported experiencing vibration, hearing grinding noises, noises when turning or hitting bumps, and not being able to shift into DRIVE or REVERSE.

Although Kia gathered parts for testing and updated the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration with new findings, engineers were unable to identify a consistent pattern of failure.

As of March 2024, Kia was aware of four customer complaints, three techline cases, and ten Kia Telluride warranty claims related to wear on the intermediate shaft spline.

Kia Telluride owners may call 800-333-4542 and ask about Kia Telluride recall number SC303.
