Jeep 4xe Battery Fire Recall – What California Owners Need to Know
What’s the Problem
On November 5, 2025, it was reported that more than 340,000 hybrid vehicles from Jeep — including certain 2020-2025 Wrangler 4xe and 2022-2026 Grand Cherokee 4xe models equipped with high-voltage battery packs from Samsung — are being recalled again for risk of battery fire.
The manufacturer estimates that approximately 5 % of the subject battery packs are defective, meaning the potential for a serious fire hazard exists.
According to the recall documents, the defect involves battery cells with “separator damage” which, combined with other internal cell interactions, may lead to ignition while driving, or even while the vehicle is parked and shut off.
Allegations
Owners of the affected Jeep 4xe hybrids may claim that the manufacturer:
Designed or supplied battery packs prone to cell defects (separator damage) that create fire risk.
Failed to adequately inspect, test or monitor the battery pack quality such that a defect-rate approaching 5 % was allowed.
Failed to timely issue an effective recall or repair program, especially given that previously recalled vehicles are again experiencing fires.
Failed to warn owners adequately about fire risk, including parking or charging guidelines, especially when the risk of fire persists after prior recalls.
These kinds of alleged failures can give rise to causes of action under California’s consumer protection laws (including the Song‑Beverly Consumer Warranty Act), warranty law, and possibly negligence or product liability law.
Recall/TSB
This is the third recall relating to the Jeep 4xe battery fire issue. Earlier recalls in 2023 and 2024 did not fully eliminate the fire risk; the current recall covers additional vehicles and reportedly includes units that had “repaired” battery packs.
The recall covers over 340,000 vehicles in the U.S., plus about 20,753 vehicles in Canada.
Importantly, the manufacturer is warning owners: Do not park your vehicle indoors or next to anything that can burn, and do not charge the vehicle until the repair is performed.
Recall letter mailing is scheduled for December 2-9, 2025, but dealers are still working out how the repair will be performed.
Symptoms
Owners of affected vehicles may experience—or be at risk of—the following:
Unexpected battery pack fire, either while driving or while parked and shut off.
Loss of charging ability or warning lights indicating high-voltage battery fault.
Unusual heat generation from the battery pack area.
Odor of burning, smoke emanating from rear/battery area of vehicle.
Inability to safely park in enclosed spaces due to fire risk warning from manufacturer.
Because the risk remains even after prior recalls and repairs, owners of previously “fixed” vehicles should remain vigilant.
How to Proceed
Document Issues: Keep detailed records of any warning lights, battery faults, fire or smoke events, charging inability, or prior recall service visits. When visiting the dealership request that the work order explicitly lists your complaint (fire risk, battery pack, hybrid high-voltage battery) at the time of drop-off.
Reasonable Number of Repair Attempts: If the same battery pack defect or fire risk persists after four or more attempts at repair, or if your vehicle has been out of service for more than 30 cumulative days, it may qualify as a “lemon.”
Monitor Symptoms: If you experience new battery faults, charging disruptions, heating of battery pack, smoke or odor from the hybrid system, or a loss of power/trust in the system — stop driving immediately and seek inspection. If the dealer cannot safely repair or eliminate the risk of fire, you should raise the issue with the manufacturer.
