Ford Expands Backup Camera Recalls: What California Drivers Need to Know
In April 2025, Ford Motor Company announced a major expansion of its backup camera recalls, now affecting nearly 290,000 vehicles across the U.S. This move follows a $165 million fine levied by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for Ford’s delays in recalling vehicles and failing to accurately report defects — particularly those involving faulty rearview and 360-degree camera systems.
What Vehicles Are Affected?
Ford’s latest recall includes:
2015 Ford F-250, F-350, F-450
2015 Ford Expedition
2015 Lincoln Navigator and MKC
2022–2023 Ford Bronco
The issues vary slightly by model but involve rearview or 360-degree camera failures, which may result in blank or distorted backup images — a clear safety hazard, especially in tight parking or reversing situations.
Why It Matters
Backup cameras are more than a convenience — they’re federally required safety equipment. If they malfunction, they can increase the risk of collisions. In fact, Ford’s recall documents already cite at least two minor accidents linked to these failures.
Ford will begin notifying owners starting May 5, 2025, and dealerships will perform camera replacements free of charge. Owners with questions can contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332, citing recall number 25S42 (rearview) or 23S48 (360-degree system).
Do You Have Lemon Law Rights in California?
If your Ford has suffered repeated camera issues that weren’t fixed after multiple repair attempts, or your vehicle has been out of service for an extended period, you may qualify for protection under the California Lemon Law.
California law requires that manufacturers promptly repair substantial defects that impact the safety, use, or value of the vehicle. And yes — backup camera failures, especially when they create a safety risk, can qualify.
