GM 6.2L V8 L87 Engine Lawsuit Filed: What California Owners Should Know
If you own a Chevrolet, GMC, or Cadillac vehicle equipped with GM’s 6.2L V8 L87 engine, you may be at risk of a serious engine defect that could entitle you to compensation under California’s Lemon Law.
A class action lawsuit was recently filed in Georgia federal court against General Motors, alleging that its popular L87 engine is defective and prone to catastrophic failure—often with little to no warning.
What’s the Issue?
The lawsuit claims that GM's 6.2L V8 L87 engine—used in many full-size trucks and SUVs—is plagued by internal manufacturing defects. Specifically, the connecting rods and crankshaft may be out of specification or contaminated with debris during assembly. These failures can lead to complete engine shutdown, putting drivers in danger and racking up thousands of dollars in repair bills.
GM has acknowledged the defect and issued NHTSA Recall No. N252494000, affecting nearly 600,000 vehicles.
Affected Vehicles
The following GM vehicles equipped with the 6.2L V8 L87 engine and manufactured between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024 may be impacted:
2019–2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
2021–2024 Chevrolet Tahoe
2021–2024 Chevrolet Suburban
2019–2024 GMC Sierra 1500
2021–2024 GMC Yukon / Yukon XL
2021–2024 Cadillac Escalade / Escalade ESV
GM’s Response
As part of the recall, GM has directed dealerships to inspect affected vehicles. If a defect is found, the engine may be replaced under warranty. Even if no failure is yet detected, some components—including the oil pan and owner’s manual—may be updated at no cost.
Notification letters began mailing on June 9, 2025.
How to Proceed
Document Issues: Keep detailed records of all repairs and communications with the manufacturer or dealership. Every visit should include a work order that clearly describes the problem.
Reasonable Number of Repair Attempts: If the issue persists after multiple repair visits—or if your vehicle has been in the shop for more than 30 days total—it may qualify under California's Lemon Law.
Monitor Symptoms: Any knocking sounds, loss of power, warning lights, or engine failure? Stop driving and seek immediate inspection.
