NHTSA Investigates 1.4 Million Honda & Acura V-6 Engines Over Rod Bearing Failures
What’s the Issue
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched a preliminary investigation into over 1.4 million Honda and Acura vehicles equipped with 3.5‑liter J‑series V‑6 engines (J35) due to connecting rod bearing failures. The inquiry targets several popular models including:
2018–2020 Acura TLX
2016–2020 Acura MDX
2016–2020 Honda Pilot
2018–2020 Honda Odyssey
2017–2019 Honda Ridgeline
This investigation is separate from a 2023 recall addressing a crankshaft-related defect. Despite that earlier recall, engine failures have continued—prompting NHTSA to expand its review to include vehicles outside the original scope. Reports include 414 consumer complaints and 2,598 manufacturer warranty claims, some describing engine failures at surprisingly low mileages and even pre-failure stalling and fires.
Why It Matters Legally & for Safety
Severe Safety Risk
A failed connecting rod bearing can lead to total engine failure—possibly causing sudden power loss while driving, increasing the risk of accidents.Incomplete Remedy?
Since these failures involve vehicles not covered by the 2023 recall, owners may still be at risk—even if their vehicle has been officially "repaired."California Owners’ Consumer Protections
Even absent a formal recall, persistent or dangerous mechanical defects may provide grounds for claims under California’s Lemon Law or Unfair Competition Law—especially when a manufacturer has been notified and repairs were not completed effectively.
Recommended Actions for Vehicle Owners
Check Your Vehicle’s Status
Enter your VIN into the NHTSA recalls portal periodically to stay updated on expansion of the recall or new investigations.Watch for Warning Signs
Be alert to engine noises, warning lights, stalling, or loss of power—especially in affected vehicle models.Document Everything
Record all communications, service visits, symptoms, and any inconvenience or safety risks experienced.Seek Legal Guidance if Necessary
If your vehicle continues to malfunction—or if repairs are delayed or ineffective—you may have legal protections under California consumer law.
