Ford Recalls 5 Million Vehicles Over Trailer Brake and Lighting Defect – What Owners Need to Know

What’s the Problem

On February 26, 2026, Ford Motor Company announced a major recall affecting a large portion of its trucks and SUVs in the United States. Approximately 4.38 million vehicles are being recalled because a software defect in the Integrated Trailer Module (ITRM) can cause trailer brake lights, turn signals, and braking functions to fail when towing — a condition that may increase the risk of a crash.

In addition to the U.S. recall, around 600,000 vehicles in Canada are included in the action.

Allegations

According to the recall notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the defect stems from a software vulnerability in the ITRM. When the vehicle starts up, the trailer module may lose communication with the vehicle’s main system, potentially disabling crucial trailer lighting and braking functions. Such failures can reduce a driver’s ability to control an attached trailer and make it less visible to other motorists, raising safety concerns and causing non-compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108.

At the time of the recall announcement, Ford had received over 800 warranty claims (405 in the U.S. plus about 400 in Canada) linked to this issue. However, no crashes or injuries had been reported as of early February 2026.

Recall Campaign Number: 26C10
NHTSA Recall ID: 26V104000

Manufacturers are required under federal law to recall vehicles when a safety defect exists. This software issue has triggered just such a recall because the defect can impair the operation of a trailer’s lighting and braking system — critical safety features when towing.

Ford will mail recall letters to registered owners between March 17 and March 23, 2026, alerting them to the defect and available remedies.

Remedy:

  • Ford plans to distribute an over-the-air (OTA) software update beginning in May 2026 that corrects the ITRM communication issue.

  • Owners may also take their vehicles to Ford or Lincoln dealerships to receive the software update at no charge.

Owners with questions about this recall can contact Ford’s customer service line at 1-866-436-7332 and reference recall number 26C10.

Symptoms (Owner Experience)

Owners of affected Ford and Lincoln vehicles may experience the following symptoms when towing a trailer:

  • A dashboard message indicating “Trailer Brake Module Fault.”

  • Rapid flashing of the turn signal indicator light.

  • A “Blind Spot Assist System Fault” message in some vehicles.

  • Loss of trailer brake lights, turn signals, or trailer braking capability during startup or while towing — even if no trailer is connected at startup.

These issues can make trailers less visible to other drivers and reduce braking effectiveness, thereby increasing the risk of a collision.

How to Proceed

If you own or lease a vehicle included in this recall, consider the following steps:

  • Check your vehicle’s status. Use your VIN to confirm whether your vehicle is part of this recall through the NHTSA recall lookup tool at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • Watch for recall notices in the mail between March 17 and March 23, 2026.

  • Schedule the software update once it becomes available in May 2026 or take your vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealership to have the update applied.

  • Document your experience with this defect if you have already experienced symptoms or incurred costs related to the defect. Such documentation can be important if warranty coverage or consumer protection rights are implicated.
