Honda Odyssey Airbag Recall: 28 Injury Reports Raise Serious Safety Concerns
What’s the Problem
Honda has issued a major safety recall affecting approximately 440,000 model year 2018–2022 Honda Odyssey minivans due to a dangerous airbag defect.
The issue involves the vehicle’s side airbags and side curtain airbags deploying without a crash. Instead of activating during a collision, these airbags may deploy when the vehicle encounters everyday road conditions such as:
Driving over potholes
Hitting speed bumps
Contact with road debris
This is the opposite of how a safety system is supposed to function and creates a serious risk of injury to occupants.
Allegations
According to recall reports and investigations, the defect stems from a faulty Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) control unit with incorrect deployment parameters.
Specifically:
The system may misinterpret normal road impacts as side collisions
The airbag deployment threshold is set too low
The system lacks sufficient margin to distinguish real crashes from routine driving events
Honda has acknowledged:
At least 28 reported injuries tied to the defect
Over 130 warranty claims related to unintended deployment
Even more concerning, Honda had been aware of the issue for years before issuing the recall, with investigations dating back to 2017.
Recall / TSB
Affected Vehicles: 2018–2022 Honda Odyssey
Total Vehicles: ~440,000
Defect: Unintended deployment of side and curtain airbags
Cause: Faulty SRS ECU programming
Repair Remedy:
Inspection of the SRS system
Reprogramming or replacement of the airbag control unit
Repairs performed free of charge
Honda estimates only about 0.1% of vehicles may exhibit the defect, but given the safety implications, the recall is still significant.
Symptoms
Owners may not receive advance warning before deployment, but potential indicators or scenarios include:
Airbags deploying after hitting a pothole or speed bump
Deployment without any collision or accident
Sudden loud explosion inside the cabin
Minor road impacts triggering major safety systems
Because airbags deploy with force, unexpected activation can cause:
Facial injuries
Burns
Loss of vehicle control
How to Proceed
Document Issues: Keep detailed records of any airbag incidents, repair visits, or complaints. Ensure everything is written in dealership repair orders.
Reasonable Number of Repair Attempts: If the issue persists after repair attempts, or the vehicle is repeatedly unsafe, it may qualify as a lemon.
Monitor Symptoms: If airbags deploy unexpectedly or you notice abnormal SRS behavior, stop driving and have the vehicle inspected immediately.
