Hyundai and Genesis Recall Nearly 300,000 Vehicles Over Seat Belt Defect
What’s the Problem
Hyundai Motor America has issued a significant safety recall impacting nearly 300,000 vehicles across both Hyundai and Genesis brands. The issue involves a critical failure in the seat belt anchoring system—one of the most fundamental safety components in any vehicle.
Regulators have determined that in certain models, the seat belt anchor may not be properly secured and can detach during a collision. If that happens, the seat belt may fail to restrain the occupant, substantially increasing the risk of serious injury. This is not a comfort or convenience defect—it goes directly to crash safety and occupant protection.
Allegations
The core allegation is that the seat belt anchor assemblies were either improperly manufactured or insufficiently reinforced, making them vulnerable to failure under crash-level forces. In a real-world collision scenario, that means the restraint system may not function as intended.
From a liability standpoint, this raises concerns about crashworthiness and whether these vehicles comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. When a seat belt fails, the consequences are immediate and severe, which is why this type of defect is treated with urgency by regulators.
Recall / TSB
The recall includes the following vehicles:
2023–2025 Hyundai Ioniq 6
2024–2026 Hyundai Santa Fe
2024–2026 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid
2023–2026 Genesis G90
Approximately 294,000 vehicles in the United States are affected.
The manufacturer’s remedy is straightforward:
Inspect the seat belt anchor assemblies
Reinforce or replace defective components as necessary
Perform all repairs at no cost to the owner
Owner notification letters are expected to begin going out around June 2026.
Related Recall Activity
In addition to the seat belt issue, Hyundai and Genesis are also dealing with a separate recall involving instrument cluster failures in certain Genesis models. In those vehicles, the digital display can go blank while driving, preventing drivers from seeing critical information such as speed and warning indicators.
While unrelated mechanically, both recalls point to a broader pattern of safety-related defects affecting key systems—restraint systems in one case, and driver information systems in another.
Symptoms
One of the more concerning aspects of this recall is that there may be no clear warning signs before failure. Most drivers will not notice anything unusual during normal use.
That said, some owners may observe that the seat belt feels loose at the mounting point or does not retract or stabilize as expected. Any unusual movement or instability around the anchor point should be treated seriously and inspected immediately.
How to Proceed
Document Issues: Keep detailed records of all repairs and communications with the manufacturer. While at the dealership, ensure that all of your complaints are noted in the work order that you receive when you first drop off your vehicle.
Reasonable Number of Repair Attempts: While the law doesn't specify an exact number, generally, if the same problem persists after four or more repair attempts, or if the vehicle is out of service for more than 30 days cumulatively, it may qualify as a "lemon."
Monitor Symptoms: Any new issues involving seat belts, warning lights, or safety systems should be taken seriously—stop driving and seek inspection immediately.
Contact Valero Law: If repairs fail, or if you experience repeated issues, you may be entitled to relief under California law. Remedies can include a repurchase of the vehicle or a cash settlement.
