Hyundai Kona Defective Battery Class Action Lawsuit Filed

Hyundai is facing a class action lawsuit regarding the battery system in the Hyundai Kona. In that class action, plaintiff’s allege that a dangerous battery defect, due to an electrical short in the battery cell. The defective batteries were produced by LG Energy Solutions, and are at risk of catching on fire while charging, parked, and/or driving. There is currently no fix available.

Plaintiff’s also allege that they were

  1. Provided with software "updates" that did nothing to repair the defect

  2. Were instructed to "have the battery's state of charge limit lowered to 80% to mitigate the risk of fire;

  3. Were advised not to park their vehicles indoors without lowering the charge limit.

The issue is pretty serious, especially when you consider that the battery system in these EV vehicles is the primary mode of thrust in these vehicles and premature battery failure is akin to engine failure of a normal internal combustion engine.

Several Hyundai Kona owners in California have also experienced issues where the Kona has been at a dealership for more than 30 days due to unavailability of battery and/or replacement components.

Impacted vehicles include the 2019-2020 Hyundai Kona, along with the 2020 Hyundai Ioniq Electric.
