Toyota Issues Recall of over 380,000 Tacomas with Rear-Axle Defect

In order to address a possible rear axle problem, Toyota is recalling 381,000 Tacoma pickup trucks from the 2022 and 2023 model years. Remaining welding debris on the rear axle "may cause certain retaining nuts to loosen over time and eventually fall off," according to a statement from the automaker. This could impair the truck's stability and braking effectiveness and raise the risk of a collision.

Toyota dealers will examine the recall-affected trucks and replace or retighten any loose nuts at no cost to the customer. In addition, dealers will replace or repair any damaged axle parts as needed, according to a Toyota statement.

Documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website are not yet available, but they should be in the next few days as Toyota issued the recall a few days ago.

Toyota says affected truck owners will receive mail notifications in April of this year. Anyone concerned that their 2022 or 2023 Tacoma might be covered by the recall can check the NHTSA recalls page or the Toyota owner website once the recall is posted on the agency's website.
