Chrysler recalls nearly 300,00 Ram 1500 in US

FCA (Chrysler) has issued a recall for 296,000 2019-2010 Ram 1500’s that need repairs to prevent the airbags and seat belt pretensioners from failing.

The 2019-2020 Ram 1500s have software problems related to the occupant restraint controllers which can disable the airbags. A software error may occur when the engine is turned off, NHTSA says. If a computer module doesn't properly reset, the airbags and seat-belt pretensioners wouldn't work properly in a collision. Fiat Chrysler says the 2019-2020 RAM 1500’s have software with vulnerabilities "during power-down memory clean-up events which can corrupt flash memory."

FCA says about a third of the recalled trucks are still at dealerships, and the 2020 trucks are pre-production models that the automaker still owns.

The repairs are expected to be available this month.

Vehicles recalled: 295,981 Ram 1500 pickup trucks from the 2019-2020 model years, built from Oct. 31, 2017 through May 21, 2019.

The problem: Software in the computer module that controls the airbags and seat belt pretensioners may become corrupt. If that happens, those systems would be disabled.

The fix: Dealerships will reprogram the module or replace it as necessary at no charge to owners.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact FCA US LLC customer service at 800-853-1403. FCA's numbers for this recall are V61 and V71.

NHTSA’s campaign number: 19V407.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly.

FCA recalling more than 800,000 Dodge RAM trucks due to steering and brake issues.

Fiat Chrysler announced that it will recall over 880,000 Ram trucks over steering and brake concerns.

The first recall affects 2013-2017 Ram 2500 and 3500 models because a nut in the vehicle's steering system could become loose and make it impossible for the driver to steer. FCA has received reports of one injury stemming from this issue and eight accidents that are possibly related.

The second recall affects over 200,000 2019 Ram 1500 models and their adjustable brake pedal system. If a driver sets the pedal to its rearmost position, the pedal could become detached from the braking system which is obviously very unsafe. This brake pedal recall comes just a month after a separate recall that stems from a potential loss of power steering in 2019 Ram 1500 models.

Kia Recalls 500,000 Vehicles With Air Bags That May Not Deploy

KIA is recalling more than 500,000 vehicles in the U.S. to fix a flaw that may prevent air bags from deploying in a crash.

This recall is related to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) investigation launched on March 16 of this year into Hyundai and Kia vehicles where, in six incidents, the airbags failed to deploy.

Kia said the 508,000 recalled vehicles have an air-bag control unit that may be susceptible to “electrical overstress” during some frontal crashes. The control unit contains a circuit that if damaged may prevent the deployment of front air bags and a mechanism that tightens the front seat belts, “thereby increasing the risk of injury to vehicle occupants,” Kia said in a statement.

The recall targets certain Forte, Optima and Sedona vehicles ranging from model years 2010 to

2013. Kia said it hasn’t yet developed a repair, but will notify owners with more details starting at the end of July.

Vehicles recalled: 507,587 Kia vehicles, including:

  • All 2010-2013 Forte cars produced from Feb. 24, 2009, through Aug. 31, 2012.
  • All 2010-2013 Forte Koup cars produced from June 5, 2009, through Aug. 31, 2012.
  • All 2011-2013 Optima cars produced from August 12, 2010, through Aug. 31, 2012.
  • All 2011-2012 Optima Hybrid cars produced from February 15, 2011, through Aug. 31, 2012.
  • All 2011-2012 Sedona minivans produced from March 3, 2010, thru Aug. 14, 2012.

The problem: According to Kia, the airbag control unit (ACU) detects the severity of a crash, then tells airbags and seatbelt pretensioners to deploy when necessary. The ACU in the recalled vehicles may be susceptible to electrical overstress during certain front crashes. If that happens, the front airbags and front seatbelt pretensioners may not deploy as needed, increasing the risk of injury to occupants.

The fix: Kia says there is no remedy currently. Once a remedy is identified and confirmed, affected owners will be notified via first-class mail with instructions regarding a repair, the automaker said in a statement. The recall is planned to begin on July 27, 2018.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners can contact Kia customer service at 800-333-4542. If Kia does not have a remedy by July 27, or if any customer feels unsafe in his/her vehicle, Kia will provide a rental car until the repair has been completed, a spokesman said late Friday.

NHTSA campaign number: 18V363000; Kia's number for this recall is SC165.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: Plug the 17-digit vehicle identification number into the NHTSA website. It will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

Chrysler recalls 4.8 MILLION vehicles over cruise control issue

Fiat Chrysler  is recalling nearly five million vehicles in the U.S. to fix a programming flaw that could prevent drivers from canceling the cruise control to slow their cars

The auto maker said that drivers could lose control of vehicle speed “in an unlikely series of events” involving a short circuit in an electrical network, which would then maintain a set speed even if the brakes are tapped or a driver attempts to turn off the cruise control function.

NHTSA goes on to state:

FCA is recalling approximately 4.8 million vehicles to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. Should this error occur, drivers may be able to stop the vehicle by depressing the brake pedal. The vehicle can then be placed into park once stopped. Drivers may also: 1) shift the transmission to neutral, 2) forcefully apply the manual brake, and 3) place the vehicle in park once stopped.

Vehicle owners should contact FCA at (866) 220-6747 for additional information concerning this recall. Report potential safety issues to NHTSA by calling (888) 327-4236 or submitting a complaint online at NHTSA.gov. Affected models, as currently identified by FCA, are:

Ford recalls 400,000 Ranger pickup trucks to replace Takata air bags

Ford says that they're going to recall approximately 400,000 trucks to replace defective air bags involved in the Takata scandal.  The recall concerns 2004-2006 Ford Rangers.

Ford said that Ranger owners can check to see if their vehicle is affected by the recall by entering their vehicle identification number (VIN) in the safety recalls page accessible on the bottom of Ford.com.

The Ford Ranger Takata airbag recall will begin December 26, 2017, but they will perform repairs in phases that will last until the end of March 2018.

Ranger owners who have questions should call Ford at 866-436-7332 and refer to recall number 17S42.

Hyundai Elantra and Kia Forte Brake Light Recall

Hyundai and Kia will recall more than a half-million compact cars in the U.S. starting next year because of a brake-light problem. The recall covers more than 390,000 Hyundai Elantras from the 2013 and 2014 model years, and more than 134,000 Kia Forte cars from 2012 through 2014.

The Associated Press, citing documents the companies filed with the federal government, reports that a polymer stopper pad between the brake pedal arm and the light switch can deteriorate and keep the brake lights on when the brakes aren't actually engaged. The problem also means a driver can shift out of park without stepping on the brake pedal. Neither automaker reported any crashes or injuries stemming from the issue.

Kia says it has received 183 warranty claims about Forte brake pedal stoppers and switches, but no reports of crashes or injuries.

Dealers will replace the stopped pads starting Jan. 30 for Kia and Feb. 8 for Hyundai.

Ford F-150 and Explorer Recall - Front Adjuster Seats

Ford has announced a recall for just over 200,000 2016 F-150s and Explorers built between January and April of that year.  The recall involves a bolt in front power-adjustable seats. The bolt is in the front adjuster system and could come loose allowing the cushion to shift during a crash. This could cause the seat's occupant to change position and not be adequately restrained, leading to an injury.

Owners with affected vehicles should bring them to a Ford dealer where the bolt will be inspected to determine if it's fine for long-term use. The bolt will also be removed to have new threadlock applied, and then reinstalled with the proper torque. This is the case whether or not the bolt is fine for long-term use, but if the bolt isn't, it will only be reinstalled as a temporary fix while Ford prepares a final fix with additional replacement parts.

The repairs will not cost the owners anything.

Fiat Chrysler Recall: Crash Detection in Jeep Liberty and Chrysler 200

Another recall for Fiat Chrysler to deal with, this time involving headrests that can malfunction in rear collisions.  FCA says that " a safety restraint control computer can degrade after several years of use....  That can stop the headrests from moving forward in a crash to protect front-row occupants from whiplash injuries."  The Wall Street Journal says"

DETROIT— Fiat Chrysler Automobiles FCAU 0.85% NV on Friday issued a recall for nearly 470,000 sedans and SUVs with a fault-prone component that may not deploy safety restraints designed to prevent whiplash in a crash.

The company said 414,134 of the recalled vehicles were sold in the U.S., where it was informed of the problem by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The NHTSA opened an investigation into the issue in June.

The recall affects 2012 model year Jeep Liberty SUVs and 2012-2013 model year Chrysler 200 and Dodge Avenger mid-sized sedans, Fiat Chrysler said.

The auto maker said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries linked to the defect, which involves an electronic detection device that may not deploy front row head restraints in the event of a rear-end crash.

Fiat Chrysler said it would send out recall notices next month to owners of the 469,988 affected vehicles sold world-wide.

Earlier this month, the company issued an unrelated recall for 709,837 sport-utility vehicles sold in North America with a potential braking defect. That followed recalls last month for about 50,000 Pacifica minivans and almost a half-million pickups and work trucks.

Frankly, most of the news posted lately has concerned Fiat Chrysler and safety recalls, which is very worrying.

2017 Challenger, Charger Hellcats recalled for potential oil line failure

If you own a Hellcat, either a Charger or Challenger, built between Feb. 6, 2017, and May 30, 2017, this is very relevant to you.  NHTSA officially acknowledged a recall from Chrysler for engine oil cooler lines that could fail, leading to major oil loss. Which of course could lead to severe engine damage.

According to the recall information, the issue lies in the rubber used in the oil cooler line. Chrysler's testing revealed that the rubber didn't meet the company's criteria. As a result it was able to separate from a crimped aluminum portion of the line, letting oil spill out.

The recall goes into effect on Sept. 22, which is when Chrysler will start reaching out to owners to alert them. The company will replace the oil cooler lines free of charge. Owners can call Chrysler's customer service at 1-800-853-1403 with any questions regarding the recall, which has the reference code "T48."

Another Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee Recall (Brakes)

Fiat Chrysler Auto (FCA) issued another huge recall on a series of vehicles it already issued a recall on.  No word yet on how long it'll take FCA to get these components in stock, especially given FCA's track record of not having recall components in stock and getting fined by NHTSA for that.  In pertinent part, the Detroit Free Press says [bold font edits are mine]:

Fiat Chrysler announced it is recalling more than 700,000 Jeep and Dodge sport-utility vehicles to resolve a potential problem with the vehicles’ brakes that can make it difficult to stop.

The action affects Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Durangos from model years 2011–14 with about 646,000 of those vehicles in the U.S.

The company said a mistake installing the brake-booster shields may allow water intrusion, which can cause corrosion and freezing, impacting the functionality of the brakes. Signs of a problem include excessive brake-pedal firmness, activations of the anti-lock brakes and illumination of a warning light.

It isn’t the first time FCA has tried to resolve the problem. In fact, the installation of the shields was supposed to eliminate the issue in 2014. However, some weren’t installed correctly the company discovered reviewing warranty data.

If you’ve taken your Grand Cherokee or Durango to a dealership issues that were covered under the manufacturer's warranty, we can help you…. Fiat Chrysler recalls 494,000 Ram trucks for fire hazard

Detroit Free Press reported this interesting information two days ago:

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is recalling almost half a million medium- and heavy-duty Ram trucks over a water pump issue that could potentially cause a fire.

The company said it is not aware of any injuries or accidents related to the issue, which affects 2013-17 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups and 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs. The recall is limited to trucks with 6.7-liter engines, the company said in a news release, noting that it no longer equips vehicles with that water pump.

"Customer feedback prompted an FCA US investigation that discovered certain trucks are equipped with a water-pump bearing that, after exposure to certain conditions, may overheat and potentially cause an engine-compartment fire," the release said. "Compromised water-pump function may activate a warning light in an affected vehicle’s instrument cluster. Customers are urged to consult their dealers whenever they observe warning lights."

The scope of any potential fire is apparently wide. A company spokesman said that "in accordance with (the) regulatory definition, which includes everything from a burning odor to open flame, we are aware of a small number of such incidents. Of these, a smaller number involved damage – none of which extended beyond the immediate area of the water pump."

The company said affected customers would be advised when service is available. The water pumps will be inspected and replaced if necessary.

The recall affects about 443,712 trucks in the United States, 46,220 in Canada and 4,485 outside North America.

Customer with questions can call the FCA U.S. Recall Information Center at (800) 853-1403.

2013 Chevrolet Cruze.... A steering, engine, transmission and water pump mess!

Automobile manufacturers release Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) to inform dealerships of unanticipated problems that can emerge after a vehicle is sold.  TSBs focus on nonsafety-related defects that might affect a vehicle’s performance or longevity, such as parts that fail prematurely or don’t operate the way they’re meant to.  They advise service technicians about how to diagnose and repair a problem, specifying tools, techniques, and the required parts.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the 2013 Chevrolet Cruze has over 405 (!!!) Technical Service Bulletins.  Here are the most serious and prevalent complaints addressed by TSBs that I've discovered covering the 2013 Chevrolet Cruze, along with the summary from the manufacturer (in their own words and font-type):

TSB #PI-0659-E (Issued April 25, 2016)

Automobile manufacturers may, from time to time, offer extended warranties (at no charge to the consumer!!) on vehicle components that the manufacturer has identified as a particular problem area for that model year vehicle..  Along that vein, Chevrolet has also issued two special campaigns for the 2013 Chevrolet Cruze. Chevrolet Cruze owners who experience issues with their water pumps or steering systems can use the two special campaigns below to potentially avoid having to pay out of pocket for repairs!

Water Pump - 14371B - SPECIAL COVERAGE (10 year / 150,000 mile warranty extension!)

SOME 2011-2014 MODEL YEAR CHEVROLET CRUZE VEHICLES AND SOME 2012-2014 CHEVROLET SONIC VEHICLES WITH THE 1.4L ENGINE MAY HAVE AN ENGINE COOLANT LEAK FROM THE WATER PUMP.

Steering - 14232 - SPECIAL COVERAGE (10 YEAR / 150,000 MILE WARRANTY EXTENSION!)

SOME VEHICLES MAY HAVE INCREASED FRICTION IN THE STEERING SYSTEM. THIS COULD CAUSE THE STEERING WHEEL TO STICK IN THE STRAIGHT-AHEAD POSITION AFTER DRIVING LONG DISTANCES ON A STRAIGHT HIGHWAY. THE STEERING WHEEL CAN BE TURNED BUT IT MAY REQUIRE INCREASED EFFORT.

If you're in California and  own a 2013 Chevrolet Cruze (or any 2011-2014 Chevrolet Cruze) and have experienced any issues related to water pump failure, stalling, power steering failure, steering sticking, or any other concern that was covered under the manufacturer's warranty, please contact us immediately at 424-299-4447 for a free consultation for information regarding your vehicle and a potential lemon law claim!
