Equinox / Terrain Oil Consumption Class Action Receives Preliminary Approval

The judge overseeing Berman v. General Motors, LLC class action involving 2010-2017 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrains has given preliminary approval to the settlement agreement. The court went further to set a final approval hearing on October 4, 2019. Notice will be sent to potential class members in the next few months.

If you are in California and if you’ve experienced oil consumption issues with your Chevrolet Equinox or GMC Terrain, you are possibly entitled to much more than what you would receive under the class action. With attentive and individualized attention, you may be entitled to a vehicle repurchase or a cash and keep settlement. This could possibly be more than what you are entitled to under the class action.

Chevrolet Spark Transmission Problems

Along the same vein of the 2016-2017 Chevrolet Malibu and Chevrolet Cruze piston problems written here, there have been more than a few complaints regarding the 2014-2017 Chevrolet Spark regarding transmission issues. Specifically, the issues revolve around a specfic transmission (RPOs M4M, MR8). Consumers have complained about the Check Engine light being illuminated and the following diagnostic trouble codes

  1. P0871 (Transmission Fluid Pressure Switch 3 System Performance)

  2. P2714 (Pressure Control Solenoid Valve 4 Stuck Off—Hydraulic/Mechanical Problem) may be set in the Transmission Control Module (TCM).

There is a reference to potential TSB named PIP5521A.

Common complaints also include:

  • Jerking or shuddering during the normal course of driving

  • Hesitations while attempting to accelerate from a stopped position

  • Engine stalls out or intermittently shutting off

  • Rough start or hard shift and sudden acceleration

  • Hesitations while attempting to accelerate from a stopped position

GM recalls 1.2M pickups, SUVs for power steering problem

GMis recalling more than one million pickup trucks and SUV’s in the U.S. for a steering defect

The defect has been linked to 30 crashes and two injuries. The trucks can lose their electronically controlled power steering momentarily before it suddenly comes back on, causing the driver to have difficulty steering, GM said in a filing to federal safety regulators. The flaw causes drivers to lose control especially at slower speeds.

A GM spokesman said the company is aware of 30 accidents and two injuries but no fatalities.

GM said the defect is caused by a software problem in the electronic-power-steering module. Dealers will update the software to fix the problem for free.

The recall consists of:

  • 2015 Chevrolet Silverado

  • 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 pickups

  • 2015 Chevy Tahoe

  • 2015 Chevy Suburban

  • 2015 Cadillac Escalade

  • 2015 GMC Yukon SUVs.

If you're in California and you’ve taken your GM vehicle to a dealership for any issue, ranging from steering issues, transmission stalling, transmission failure, overheating, or any other warranty concern, we can help you…. AT NO COST TO YOU! Valero Law, APC is a California consumer protection firm dedicated to protecting the lemon law rights of California consumers and ALL cases are taken on a contingency basis, meaning if there is no recovery, there is absolutely no fee to you! 2018 GM Fuel Pump Recall

GM is recalling approximately 850 Buick, Cadillac, Chevy and GMC vehicles at risk of leaking fuel and causing fires.  They are the:

  • 2018 Buick LaCrosse
  • 2018 Cadillac ATS
  • 2018 Chevrolet Equinox
  • 2018 Chevrolet Malibu
  • 2018 Chevrolet Colorado
  • 2018 GMC Terrain
  • 2018 GMC Acadia
  • 2018 GMC Canyon

GM says the joint that connects the fuel pump’s outer housing to the pump’s flange may not have been properly welded by the supplier. Over time, the weld could crack and cause a separation of the high-pressure fuel pump from the flange, allowing the pump to oscillate inside the engine compartment.

The automaker says the movement of the pump is what could potentially damage the high-pressure fuel line and cause fuel to leak. Any gas that makes contact with an ignition source can easily start a fire.

General Motors says it doesn't have a clue as to when the recall will begin, but dealers will need to replace the fuel pumps and fuel lines.

Customers with questions or concerns should call Buick at 800-521-7300, Cadillac at 800-458-8006, Chevrolet at 800-222-1020 or GMC at 800-462-8782.

2015-2016 Chevrolet Silverado Pretensioner Cable Recall

Vehicles Affected: Model-year 2015-16 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks are part of a recall affecting approximately 23,000 vehicles; the recall includes Tahoe Police Pursuit and Special-Service SUVs

The Problem: The flexible steel cable connecting the driver's seat belt to the outboard side of the seat may be repeatedly bent over the seat side shield as the driver enters and exits the vehicle, causing the cable to fatigue and separate. If the cable becomes fatigued or breaks, the driver may not be properly restrained, increasing their risk of injury in the event of a crash.

The Fix: Dealers will replace the pretensioner cable and seat side shield for free.

What Owners Should Do: Chevrolet manufacturer GM did immediately announce an owner-notification schedule. Owners can call the automaker at 800-222-1020, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.

Chevrolet Equinox / GMC Terrain PCV Warranty Extension

I wrote about a warranty extension for Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain owners here, where General Motors offered owners of 2010-2012 Equinox and Terrain owners a completely free warranty extension covering oil consumption issues.  I also wrote of a warranty extension for the catalytic converter for 2010-2011 Chevrolet Equinox's and GMC Terrains here.  I've found another warranty extension for the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system.  This is more good news because it means that if your car has fewer than 120,000 miles and your vehicle requires a PCV system repair, you can have that done at a GM dealership at no cost to you.  The bulletin is titled 14882: Special Coverage Adjustment – Plugged PCV Orifice In Intake Manifold – 2010-2014 Buick Chevrolet GMC and is copy / pasted below:

Condition: Certain 2010-2013 Buick LaCrosse; 2011-2013 Buick Regal; 2012-2013 Buick Verano; 2011-2013 Chevrolet Captiva; 2010-2014 Chevrolet Equinox; 2013 Chevrolet Mailbu; 2012-2013 Chevrolet Orlando; 2010-2013 GMC Terrain vehicles equipped with a 2.4L engine (LAF, LEA or LUK) that have experienced high oil consumption may also experience a frozen and/or plugged PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) system during cold weather operation. This condition may increase crankcase pressure leading to a rear crankshaft seal oil leak. If the oil leak is ignored or not noticed, an engine clatter noise may be noticeable and/or the engine pressure warning light may illuminate. If this condition is not corrected, continued driving with engine noise and/or the engine oil pressure light illuminated may damage the engine.

Special Coverage Adjustment:

This special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 10 years or 120,000 miles (193,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership.

Dealers are to perform a crankcase pressure check, and if required, remove the intake manifold and clear the PCV orifice. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer.

If you're in California and you own a 2010-2013 Chevrolet Equinox or GMC Terrain and have experienced any issues related to excessive oil consumption, stalling, poor engine performance, camshaft actuator failure or any other concern that was covered under the manufacturer's warranty, please contact us immediately at 424-299-4447 for a free consultation for information regarding your vehicle and a potential lemon law claim!

Chevy issues Customer Satisfaction Bulletin for reduced propulsion due to battery for the BOLT

After a few consumer complaints, Chevrolet has issued a Customer Satisfaction Bulletin for the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt.  While not rising to the level of a compulsory recall, Chevy is taking the additional step to inform all owners of 2017 Chevrolet Bolts via mail and even phoning a few.

The Bulletin combats a "reduced propulsion" issue that is due to the battery and the repair is a ECM reprogram.  The bulletin details are:

GM Program #:  N172127150
Date Issued:  Apr 03, 2018
Program Title:  Loss of Propulsion High Voltage Battery Without Notification - Expires 4/30/2020
Program Description:
Certain 2017 model year Bolt EV vehicles may have a condition where the calibration will not detect the difference in the state of charge between the cell groups of the battery. This condition may not provide sufficient warning prior to a battery cell low voltage condition, which may result in a loss of propulsion. Only certain vehicles will experience the battery low voltage cell condition.

Repair Description:
Reprogram hybrid powertrain control module 2.

If you're in California and have taken your Chevrolet Bolt  to a dealership for battery issues, or any other warranty concern, we can help you…. 2013 Chevrolet Equinox Oil Consumption Problems

I've been doing a fair amount of research into the 2010-2012 Chevrolet Equinox's and their oil consumption issues.  Information on that can be found here, here and here

Based on NHTSA statistics and consumer complaints and a recently filed class action, it appears that 2013 Chevrolet Equinox owners are also complaining about severe oil consumption issues.  Some complaints taken from NHTSA follow:

  • VEHICLE HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING STALLING CONDITIONS IN WET WEATHER, DEALER REPLACED A CAM POSITION SENSOR. TODAY AFTER TAKING THE CAR THROUGH A CAR WASH UPON STARTING THE ENGINE IT WENT INTO WIDE OPEN THROTTLE CONDITION, OVER 6000 RPM. AT FIRST I WAS STANDING ON THE BRAKES TO KEEP THE VEHICLE FROM ACCELERATING OUT OF CONTROL. AFTER 10 MINUTES THE IDLE DROPPED TO NORMAL AND WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR HOME.
  • I WAS DRIVING MY EQUINOX ON MY WAY HOME FROM WORK, A 30 MINUTE COMMUTE. MY ENGINE STARTED MAKING SOME TICKING NOISES WHEN I WAS 5 MINUTES FROM HOME. I MADE IT ABOUT ANOTHER MILE AND MY ENGINE STARTED CLANKING, I TRIED TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AS MY ENGINE SHUT OFF. IT WAS BITTERLY COLD AND I HAD TO PICK UP MY GIRLS FROM DAYCARE, SO I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE NEAREST MECHANIC AND FOUND A RIDE.

TURNS OUT, MY ENGINE HAD A HGH OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEM DUE TO PLUGGED PCV/INTAKE SYSTEM CAUSED ENGINE TO RUN DRY OF OIL DURING OPERATION. NO ENGINE PRESSURE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. NO OTHER WARNING SIGNS. THE ENGINE WAS DAMAGED AT REAR CRANKCASE SEAL/REAR MAIN. IT HAD 97,000 MILES AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT.

  • ON 12/25/2017 MY ENGINE FAILED AT 60 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY. I WAS ALMOST RE-ENDED BY THE VEHICLE BEHIND ME DUE TO THE RAPID DECELERATION OF MY VEHICLE BUT MANAGED TO SAFELY PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY WHERE WE WAITED FOR ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE IN -20 WINDCHILLS.

THE ENGINE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY A FROZEN PCV VALVE ORIFICE WHICH PRESSURIZED THE CRANKCASE AND BLEW THE MAIN SEAL. AFTER REPLACING THE MAIN SEAL IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE ENGINE WAS DAMAGED BEYOND REPAIR AND HAD TO BE REPLACED AT MY EXPENSE.

MY VEHICLE ENGINE AND YEAR MATCHES THE GROUP COVERED BY SPECIAL SERVICE ADJUSTMENT 14882 BUT MY VIN, LIKE SO MANY LISTED ON THIS SITE, WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE SPECIAL COVERAGE DESPITE THE FACT THAT MY ENGINE FAILURE WAS DUE TO THE EXACT DEFECT DEFINED IN BULLETIN 14882.

2013 Chevrolet Equinox Oil Consumption

Consumer complaints regarding the 2013 Chevrolet Equinox equipped with a 2.4 liter engine and oil consumption have been on the rise lately, which is unfortunate considering that the vehicle is equipped with a 5 year powertrain warranty.  Since that is the case and most of these vehicles were purchased in or around 2012, most of these warranties on these vehicles have lapsed since five years have passed.

General Motors has issued warranty extensions for the 2010, 2011, and 2012 model year Equinox, but has not issued one for the 2013.

If you're in California and own a 2010-2012 Terrain or Equinox and have experienced any issues related to excessive oil consumption, stalling, poor engine performance, camshaft actuator failure or any other concern that was covered under the manufacturer's warranty, please contact us immediately at 424-299-4447 for a free consultation for information regarding your vehicle and a potential lemon law claim!

2014-2015 Chevrolet Silverado & GMC Sierra Shakes, aka The Chevy Shake

GM engineers can’t seem to pinpoint the cause of a systemic 'shaking' in vehicles riding on GM’s K2XX platform, such as the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra.  Owners have aptly titled the issue "The Chevy Shake"

The AutoGuide goes on to describe the issue as:

Online forums and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) complaints database are flooded with posts alleging that GM’s full-size SUVs, including the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade, all exhibit the same off-putting traits: unexplainable wind buffeting and vibration. Many of the complaints allege that these problems also affect the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra.

GM issued a preliminary information bulletin (PIT) over the issue. Poorly attached roof sheet metal is the main issue that GM looked to fix and instructions for doing so are located in PIT5318B. To perform the fix, technicians have to remove the vehicle’s headliner and inspect the roof bows for proper bonding with the roof sheet metal. If there is an issue, the bonding must be completely redone, which means new panel control vibration material is packed into the roof of all SUVs that have received this fix.

The PIT is accessible here and only covers the 2015 Cadillac Escalade, 2015 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe and GMC Yukon.

PIT PIT5451A was also released and says it "This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that have a vibration at highway speed. Technician will need to replace the wheel for a rolled lip of aluminum in the hub opening."  That covers the following vehicles:

  • 2011, 2014 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500
  • 2011-2016 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500
  • 2013 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 3500
  • 2014 GMC SIERRA 1500
  • 2011-2016 GMC SIERRA 2500
  • 2011-2013, 2015-2016 GMC SIERRA DENALI

General Motors Brakes Class Action - Harris v. General Motors, LLC

A class action lawsuit was filed on October 23, 2017 in a Texas court alleging that General Motors vehicles have brake booster problems that necessitate the replacements of the boosters and master cylinders.

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Texarkana Division - John J. Harris, et. al., v. General Motors Company (5:2017cv00180). Class counsel is Wyly and Rommel and can be reached here: https://www.wylyrommel.com/

The proposed GM brake failure class-action lawsuit includes all former and current owners and lessees of the following vehicles:

  • 2015-2016 Cadillac Escalade

  • 2014-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

  • 2015-2016 Chevrolet Suburban

  • 2015-2106 Chevrolet Tahoe

  • 2014-2016 GMC Sierra 1500

  • 2015-2016 GMC Yukon

The lawsuit alleges GM's strategy is to engage in deception upon customers, while even technical service bulletins allegedly contain false and deceptive information about fixing the defects because the repairs do not fix the vehicles and the statements are designed to mislead dealers and vehicle owners.

According to the lawsuit, GM issued a series of service bulletins to dealers regarding the brake problems.

If you’re in California and you own a Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado, Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Sierra or GMC Yukon and have experienced any issues related to premature brake wear or any other concern that was covered under the manufacturer's warranty, please contact us immediately at 424-299-4447 for a free consultation for information regarding your vehicle and a potential lemon law claim!

Chevrolet Equinox / GMC Terrain Catalytic Converter Warranty Extension

I wrote about a warranty extension for Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain owners here, where General Motors offered owners of 2010-2012 Equinox and Terrain owners a completely free warranty extension covering oil consumption issues.  Along that same road, General Motors has also issued a warranty extension for 2010-2011 Chevrolet Equinoxes and Terrains with 2.4L engines regarding the catalytic converter.  This is good news because it means that if your car has fewer than 120,000 miles and your vehicle requires a catalytic converter replacement, you can have that done at a GM dealership at no cost to you.  The bulletin is titled 15810-01: Special Coverage – Catalytic Converter Replacement – 2010-2011 Chevrolet Equinox & GMC Terrain and is copy / pasted below:

Condition: On some 2010-2011 model year Chevrolet Equinox and GMCTerrain vehicles that are equipped with a 2.4L engine (RPO LAF), a malfunction-indicator light (MIL) may illuminate due to thermal damage or face erosion of the catalytic converter.

Special Coverage Adjustment: This special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 10 years or 120,000 miles (193,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership.

Correction Replace the catalytic converter. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer.

If you own a 2010-2012 Chevrolet Equinox or GMC Terrain and have experienced any issues related to excessive oil consumption, stalling, poor engine performance, camshaft actuator failure or any other concern that was covered under the manufacturer's warranty, please contact us immediately at 424-299-4447 for a free consultation for information regarding your vehicle and a potential lemon law claim!

Equinox Oil Policy Change: GM alerts 779,000 owners to need for more-frequent oil changes

Given the issues with oil consumption and the 2.4 liter engine in Equinoxes and Terrains, I figured this news article would be relevant to post again right now:

GM alerts 779,000 owners to need for more-frequent oil changes

DETROIT -- General Motors is warning owners of almost 800,000 2010-12 vehicles that they may need oil changes more frequently than their onboard oil monitoring systems are telling them.

After high warranty claims on several models with four-cylinder engines, GM will reprogram software to make oil change warning lights go on sooner.

The change only affects 2010-2012 Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain and Buick LaCrosse and Regal models with 2.4-liter LAF and LEA four-cylinder engines.

GM sent letters asking 778,956 owners of those vehicles to take them back to dealerships. The service will be done at no charge until Feb. 28, 2015.

"Even if they were out of warranty, they would still be good to have this done through that period," said GM spokesman Alan Adler. "After that, the dealers have discretion to make the customers happy."

The program involves vehicles in the United States as well as any affected vehicles that were exported.

"It is a U.S. program but exported vehicles would be treated the same," Adler said.

Adler said the changes resulting from the software reprogramming would not be dramatic.

Owner's manuals say the engine oil and filter must be changed at least once a year. Further guidance appears on a display screen that expresses remaining oil life as a percentage. Driving style and environment play a role in the readings.

GM began updating the software in December after noticing warranty claims for worn-out balance chains. The chains link the crankshaft and the balance shaft -- "just like the chain on your bicycle goes from the pedals to your back wheel" -- and make noise when they're worn, Adler said. The company declined to disclose the number of claims.

Product investigators found that recalibrating the oil-life monitor will help the chains last longer, Adler said.

The monitor "tells you when you should change your oil. It might be 5,000 miles, it might be 7,000 miles. It's going to vary based on how you drive your car," Adler said.

"Those intervals between oil changes were longer, but now they're going to be a little shorter because we have to find the right balance between how long the parts last and how much lubricant the vehicle needs."

Adler said the program is not a recall because it does not involve a safety issue.

Clarence Ditlow, executive director of the Center for Auto Safety in Washington, said a safety recall never expires, as opposed to the limited time frame of a voluntary equipment-modification program that does not involve a safety issue.

Said Ditlow: "A customer satisfaction program is something that each manufacturer at its discretion decides to implement."

2010-2017 Chevrolet Equinox Oil Consumption Class Action Filed

Hot on the heels of a recent post regarding Oil Consumption in 2012 Chevrolet Equinox's, on September 23, 2017 a law firm (not Valero Law, APC) in California filed a class action against General Motors for, you guessed it, oil consumption.  The substance of the class action is alleged as:

[.....] the Class Vehicles need the proper amount of engine oil in order for their engines and
related parts to function properly and safely.

The Oil Consumption Defect is a safety concern because it prevents the engine from maintaining the proper level of engine oil, causing excessive oil consumption that cannot be reasonably anticipated or predicted. Therefore, the Oil Consumption Defect is unreasonably dangerous because it can cause engine failure while the Class Vehicles are in operation at any time and under any driving conditions or speeds, exposing the Class Vehicle drivers, their passengers, and others who share the road with them to serious risks of accidents and injury.

Because the Oil Consumption Defect can cause the Class Vehicles to consume unacceptably high amounts of engine oil, the rate of oil consumption for some Class Vehicles can be
as high as one quart of oil per 1,000 miles driven. The Oil Consumption Defect thus requires the addition of substantial amounts of oil between scheduled oil changes and can even result in engine damage. As a result of the Oil Consumption Defect, its potential safety hazards, and GM’s refusal to  acknowledge and fix the problem, many consumers have resorted to purchasing an extra supply of oil and carrying it with them at all times when driving.

The complaint can be found here.

Individual actions, as opposed to class actions, are preferable as the potential reward can be much greater and, since each case is unique in it's own right, individualized attention can be given to each matter.

The Chevrolet Equinox / Terrain engine that consumes too much oil

Engine stalling while driving down a busy street.  An abnormally high idle when at a stop sign. Oil consumption light constantly on.  These are all issues that owners of 2010-2012 Chevrolet Equinoxes and GMC Terrains have complained online and to General Motors dealerships.  What’s the cause here?  And what can be done?

Terrain Oil Consumption.png

What are the facts?

2010-2012 Chevrolet Equinoxes and GMC Terrains have an oil consumption problem.  These cars consume too much oil and even Consumer Reports has chimed in on the oil consumption issue.  All the metal moving components within a modern vehicle engine require a lubricant agent, like oil.  If there is no oil in the engine, then engine performance will start to suffer, causing a range of symptoms like stalling, engine rattle, a high engine idle and a puttering feeling while driving.  If oil isn’t added to the engine, it can (and most likely will) cause piston failure…. Which is more commonly known as a blown engine.  And that can cost thousands of dollars to repair.

General Motors has issued several Technical Service Bulletins (you can read all about those here) alerting dealerships that there have been complaints regarding oil consumption and how to they think they can repair the issue.  First was TSB 12312, which was an update to the Oil Life Monitor that is on the Equinox dashboard.  Rather than solve the oil consumption issue, what this update does is “reduce the interval between oil changes, which varies based on driving habits and conditions.”  Essentially GM’s ‘repair’ here is for your car to tell you to change your oil every 3,000 miles, instead of the earlier 5,000 miles.  Rather than fix the problem causing the oil consumption, GM suggests just putting more oil in your car.  Right.

Later General Motors issued a recall on the high pressure fuel pump, citing that “excessive wear on the plunger piston shaft and shaft seal. If this happens fuel can leak into the engine oil crankcase and result in the engine running rough and illumination of the malfunction indicator lamp.” That’s a bit better, but it potentially hasn’t repaired the whole problem here.

Then, in TSB 13-06-01-003G, GM advised that if consumers complained to a dealership regarding high oil consumption in their Equinox, the dealership is to run an oil consumption test.  If the oil consumption test shows that the vehicle is consuming too much oil, then major engine work is required as a fix.

Is there any good news at least?

YES!  General Motors has issued a warranty extension relating to oil consumption.  If you’re the owner of a 2010 Equinox or Terrain with oil consumption issues, you can have the repairs potentially done for free if the vehicle was purchased within the last 10 years or if the car has fewer than 120,000 miles on it (per TSB 14159).  If you own a 2011 or 2012, you can have the repairs done just the same, but the vehicle must have been purchased within the past 7 years and 6 months.

And the best news?

2013 Chevrolet Cruze.... A steering, engine, transmission and water pump mess!

Automobile manufacturers release Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) to inform dealerships of unanticipated problems that can emerge after a vehicle is sold.  TSBs focus on nonsafety-related defects that might affect a vehicle’s performance or longevity, such as parts that fail prematurely or don’t operate the way they’re meant to.  They advise service technicians about how to diagnose and repair a problem, specifying tools, techniques, and the required parts.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the 2013 Chevrolet Cruze has over 405 (!!!) Technical Service Bulletins.  Here are the most serious and prevalent complaints addressed by TSBs that I've discovered covering the 2013 Chevrolet Cruze, along with the summary from the manufacturer (in their own words and font-type):

TSB #PI-0659-E (Issued April 25, 2016)

Summary: THIS PRELIMINARY INFORMATION BULLETIN PROVIDES A PROCEDURE TO INSPECT AND REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMN SEAL TO CORRECT A CUSTOMER CONCERN ON A RUBBER SQUEAK TYPE NOISE WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL DUE TO THE SEAL FOR THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT.

TSB #PIE-0298-A (Issued July 1, 2014)

Automobile manufacturers may, from time to time, offer extended warranties (at no charge to the consumer!!) on vehicle components that the manufacturer has identified as a particular problem area for that model year vehicle..  Along that vein, Chevrolet has also issued two special campaigns for the 2013 Chevrolet Cruze. Chevrolet Cruze owners who experience issues with their water pumps or steering systems can use the two special campaigns below to potentially avoid having to pay out of pocket for repairs!

Water Pump - 14371B - SPECIAL COVERAGE (10 year / 150,000 mile warranty extension!)

SOME 2011-2014 MODEL YEAR CHEVROLET CRUZE VEHICLES AND SOME 2012-2014 CHEVROLET SONIC VEHICLES WITH THE 1.4L ENGINE MAY HAVE AN ENGINE COOLANT LEAK FROM THE WATER PUMP.

Steering - 14232 - SPECIAL COVERAGE (10 YEAR / 150,000 MILE WARRANTY EXTENSION!)

SOME VEHICLES MAY HAVE INCREASED FRICTION IN THE STEERING SYSTEM. THIS COULD CAUSE THE STEERING WHEEL TO STICK IN THE STRAIGHT-AHEAD POSITION AFTER DRIVING LONG DISTANCES ON A STRAIGHT HIGHWAY. THE STEERING WHEEL CAN BE TURNED BUT IT MAY REQUIRE INCREASED EFFORT.

If you're in California and  own a 2013 Chevrolet Cruze (or any 2011-2014 Chevrolet Cruze) and have experienced any issues related to water pump failure, stalling, power steering failure, steering sticking, or any other concern that was covered under the manufacturer's warranty, please contact us immediately at 424-299-4447 for a free consultation for information regarding your vehicle and a potential lemon law claim!

2012 Chevrolet Equinox Extended Warranties

Generally, every car purchase comes with at least three warranties extended from the manufacturer to the purchaser of the vehicle.  The 2012 Chevrolet Equinox has the following warranties

  • 36 months / 36,000 mile Bumper to Bumper Warranty, which covers nearly all components within the vehicle "for warrantable repairs that are required as a result of defects due to material and/or workmanship to the components."
  • 72 months / 100,000 mile Powertrain Warranty, which covers the engine, transmission, transaxle, transfer case and drive systems.
  • 96 months / 80,000 mile Emissions Warranty, which covers the catalytic converter and the Electronic Emissions Control Unit (ECU)

With that, the manufacturer may, from time to time, issue warranties in addition to those issued at the time of purchase, which are issued to compensate consumers for performance related defects that manifest after purchase.

General Motors has issued an extended warranty on the following components of the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox (all related to oil consumption):

Here, the most significant extended warranty is 16118, where:

  1. GM admits that some Equinox's / Terrains have an oil consumption issue in the first sentence.
  2. Gives the owner an extended warranty of 7 years and six months (or 120,000 miles), whichever comes first.
