2015-2018 Chevrolet Trax Suspension Recall

On September 12, 2019 General Motors issued a new recall for the 2015-2018 Chevrolet Trax regarding problematic Lower Control Arms. It affects over 90,000 vehicles. In Recall # 19V65200 GM says:

Potential Number of Units Affected: 93,693

Problem Description: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Chevrolet Trax vehicles. A joint in one or both of the front lower-control arms may have been improperly welded. An improperly welded joint may break, resulting in the partial separation of the lower control arm from the vehicle.

Consequence: A partial separation of the lower-control arm from the vehicle could cause the attached front wheel to toe outward, impacting the vehicle's handling and steering and increasing the risk of crash.

Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the left and right front lower-control arms, replacing them as necessary, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is A192261870.

The NHTSA documentation can be found here.

2018 Chevrolet Malibu Fuel Injector Recall

2018 Chevrolet Malibu fuel injector issues are forcing GM to recall a little over 177,000 model year 2018 cars equipped with 1.5-liter turbo engines.

General Motors says software problems can cause the fuel injectors to become disabled.

The Malibu may stall without warning while driving and the disabled fuel injectors will prevent the engine from starting.

General Motors says it's possible a driver will see an illuminated check engine warning light when the fuel injectors fail.

Here are the main comments from GM to NHTSA:

Potential Number of Units Affected: 177,276

Problem Description: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2018 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles equipped with 1.5L turbo engines. An error in the Engine Control Module (ECM) software may result in the fuel injectors being disabled.

Consequence: Disabled fuel injectors would prevent the engine from starting and may cause a stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the ECM software, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-630-2438. GM's number for this recall is N192221960

Equinox / Terrain Oil Consumption Class Action Receives Preliminary Approval

The judge overseeing Berman v. General Motors, LLC class action involving 2010-2017 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrains has given preliminary approval to the settlement agreement. The court went further to set a final approval hearing on October 4, 2019. Notice will be sent to potential class members in the next few months.

If you are in California and if you’ve experienced oil consumption issues with your Chevrolet Equinox or GMC Terrain, you are possibly entitled to much more than what you would receive under the class action. With attentive and individualized attention, you may be entitled to a vehicle repurchase or a cash and keep settlement. This could possibly be more than what you are entitled to under the class action.

Chevrolet Cruze, Equinox and Malibu Water Pump Problems

In addition to the piston problems currently noted for the 2016-2017 Chevrolet Malibu and Chevrolet Cruze, there have been an abnormal amount of complaints regarding the water pump as well. So much so, GM has updated their Technical Service Bulletin regarding the same. The number and name of the TSB is “#18-NA-335 - Information Small Engine Water Pump and Water Pump Housing Replacement - (Jan 3, 2019)” Reference to it can be found here and some information below.

2016 - 2017 Chevrolet Malibu Premature Piston Failure

A few weeks ago I wrote about 2016-2017 Chevrolet Malibu’s and how they’ve been experiencing issues with the pistons within their engine.

After more research, the problem appears to be more widespread than thought. The warranty extension regarding an update to the ECM can be found here.

Needless to say, replacing the pistons within an engine can be considered major work done to the vehicle, as well as alteration of the computer that runs the vehicle (ECM). If this work has been done, the vehicle will not operate the same as when it was purchased.

Government NHTSA begins to look into GM Brake Failures

A few months ago, I wrote about the class action Harris v. GM (filed by a different firm), which revolves around brake booster and brake vacuum pump failure in several newer, SUV GM vehicles. Now, finally, after enough complaints were made, NHTSA has now opened an investigation into GM and those vehicles. This investigation includes more than 2.7 million vehicles after the government received 111 complaints about hard brake pedals in Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC models.

The models covered are:

  • 2014 -2016 Cadillac Escalade

  • 2014-2016 Cadillac Escalade ESV

  • 2014 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid

  • 2014-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

  • 2014-2016 Chevrolet Suburban

  • 2014-2016 Chevrolet Tahoe

  • 2014-2016 Chevrolet Tahoe Police Pursuit

  • 2014-2015 GMC Denali

  • 2014-2016 GMC Sierra 1500

  • 2014-2016 GMC Sierra Denali

  • 2014-2016 GMC Yukon

  • 2015-2016 GMC Yukon Denali

  • 2014-2016 GMC Yukon Denali XL

  • 2014-2016  GMC Yukon XL

From NHTSA’s webpage:

Brake Vacuum Pump Failure

NHTSA Action Number: PE18012

Components SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC, SERVICE BRAKES

Opened From: November 20, 2018–Present

Summary

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 111 reports of hard brake pedal effort accompanied by extended stopping distance in model years (MY) 2014 to 2016 General Motors (GM) light trucks based on the K2XX platform, 1500 series Pickup Trucks and Sport Utility Vehicles (Silverado, Sierra, Suburban, Yukon, Tahoe, Escalade). These conditions are attributed to deterioration of the engine-driven brake assist vacuum pump. Nine of these incidents included vehicles incurring damage as a result colliding with another vehicle or fixed object at low speeds.

The brake assist vacuum pump is driven by an accessory belt on the engine and serves as the source of power brake vacuum in the subject vehicles. Over time, the pump's capacity to generate vacuum may deteriorate. The subject vehicles receive supplemental hydraulic brake assist from the ABS system, albeit at lower levels than the vacuum-powered primary system. If the brake assist vacuum pump fails to operate as intended, the amount of brake power assist supplied to the driver can be significantly reduced, extending the subject vehicle stopping distance.

A Preliminary Evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency, circumstances, and safety consequences of the alleged defect.

The website can be found here.

2018 GM Fuel Pump Recall

GM is recalling approximately 850 Buick, Cadillac, Chevy and GMC vehicles at risk of leaking fuel and causing fires.  They are the:

  • 2018 Buick LaCrosse
  • 2018 Cadillac ATS
  • 2018 Chevrolet Equinox
  • 2018 Chevrolet Malibu
  • 2018 Chevrolet Colorado
  • 2018 GMC Terrain
  • 2018 GMC Acadia
  • 2018 GMC Canyon

GM says the joint that connects the fuel pump’s outer housing to the pump’s flange may not have been properly welded by the supplier. Over time, the weld could crack and cause a separation of the high-pressure fuel pump from the flange, allowing the pump to oscillate inside the engine compartment.

The automaker says the movement of the pump is what could potentially damage the high-pressure fuel line and cause fuel to leak. Any gas that makes contact with an ignition source can easily start a fire.

General Motors says it doesn't have a clue as to when the recall will begin, but dealers will need to replace the fuel pumps and fuel lines.

Customers with questions or concerns should call Buick at 800-521-7300, Cadillac at 800-458-8006, Chevrolet at 800-222-1020 or GMC at 800-462-8782.

Chevrolet Equinox Window Recall

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2018 Chevrolet Equinox vehicles. The driver and front passenger door window glass may not be properly tempered. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 205, "Glazing Materials."

Remedy

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the glass in the front doors, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin May 11, 2018. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 18136.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
