Audi Q5 Recall: Oil Leak Defect Raises Fire Risk for 2022–2024 Models
Audi has issued a recall for approximately 89,000 Q5 and Q5 Sportback SUVs from model years 2022 through 2024 due to a potentially dangerous oil leak that could lead to engine fires. The issue stems from improperly torqued cylinder head cover screws, which may loosen over time and allow oil to escape onto hot engine components.
What’s Causing the Problem?
The root of the defect lies in manufacturing inconsistencies. Audi discovered that some cylinder head cover screws were not tightened to the correct torque specifications during assembly. Additionally, some screws had burrs that damaged the sealing surface, further compromising the integrity of the seal. This can result in oil leaks that, if the oil contacts hot engine parts, may cause smoke or even fires.
How Widespread Is the Issue?
Audi has received 2,539 warranty claims related to oil leaks and 11 reports of “thermal events” (engine fires or overheating incidents) in the U.S. Although the automaker estimates that only about 5% of the recalled vehicles may have loose screws, the potential risk has prompted a proactive recall.
What Should Owners Do?
Audi plans to begin mailing recall notification letters to affected owners on July 8, 2025. Once notified, owners can take their vehicles to an authorized Audi or Volkswagen dealership, where technicians will inspect and, if necessary, replace the cylinder head cover screws free of charge. In the meantime, owners can check if their vehicle is affected by visiting Audi’s recall website and entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
Potential Lemon Law Implications
If your Audi Q5 has experienced repeated oil leaks, engine smoke, or other related issues—even before the official recall—you may have rights under California’s lemon law. This law provides protections for consumers who purchase or lease defective vehicles, potentially entitling them to a refund, replacement, or cash compensation.
