Ford F-150 Axle Bolt Recall: What California Owners Need to Know

What’s the Issue

Ford is issuing a recallCustomer Satisfaction Program 25V‑512 (internal 25S82)—for over 103,000 F‑150 pickup trucks (model years 2023–2025) due to a defective rear axle hub bolt that may fatigue and break. This defect can damage the axle hub splines, potentially causing the vehicle to roll away when parked without the parking brake, or lead to a loss of drive power, both of which significantly increase the risk of a crash. NHTSA estimates that approximately 1% of the affected vehicles actually exhibit the defect. Dealerships will replace the rear axle shaft assemblies free of charge.

Legal Implications & Risks

  • Safety Hazard
The possibility of a rollaway or power loss presents a serious crash risk for owners and others.

  • Vehicle Value & Reliability
Recurring mechanical issues—even if officially corrected—can diminish the value and reliability of your vehicle.

  • Potential Consumer Claims
In California, owners who face repeat mechanical problems or unsafe vehicle conditions—even after recall repairs—may have legitimate grounds for claims under the California Lemon Law or state consumer protection statutes.

Steps You Need to Take

  1. Check Your Recall Status
Visit the NHTSA recall lookup or input your VIN on Ford’s recall portal to confirm whether your vehicle is affected.

  2. Listen for Warning Signs

    • Clicking or clicking-like noises from the rear axle might indicate a loose bolt.

    • Rattling may signal a broken bolt or damaged splines.

  3. Schedule the Free Replacement
Dealerships will replace the left and right rear axle shaft assemblies. Notification letters are being mailed in phases from August 18, 2025 through May 22, 2026.

  4. Document Everything
Retain your initial invoice, recall notice, communication with Ford or dealers, and records of any symptoms or delays.

  5. If Issues Persist, Consider Legal Help
Continued malfunction or safety concerns post-recall may qualify your vehicle for a Lemon Law claim or other consumer relief.
