Jeep Cherokee PTU Recall May Cause Loss of Drive Power and Rollaway Risk
Owners of certain 2019–2023 Jeep Cherokees are now facing another major drivetrain-related recall involving the vehicle’s Power Transfer Unit (“PTU”). According to reports and recall documents, the PTU may fail internally, potentially causing a sudden loss of drive power or even allowing the vehicle to roll away while parked.
For California consumers, this latest recall may raise serious safety concerns and could potentially support a California Lemon Law claim if repeated repairs or unresolved issues substantially impair the use, value, or safety of the vehicle.
What’s the Problem
The recall involves certain 2019–2023 Jeep Cherokee SUVs equipped with a two-speed PTU system. The PTU is a drivetrain component responsible for transferring engine power to the rear wheels in all-wheel-drive configurations.
According to the recall information, the PTU may fail internally. If that happens, drivers could experience:
Sudden and unrecoverable loss of drive power
Vehicle rollaway while in park
Warning lights or “Service 4WD” messages
Grinding noises or vibrations
Changes in drivability or vehicle handling
The defect appears particularly concerning because the loss of power can allegedly occur at any speed, including highway driving.
Allegations
Federal safety regulators and recall reports indicate that the defective PTU may internally fracture or fail, causing the drivetrain to disconnect unexpectedly. Reports also indicate at least one accident and one injury potentially associated with the condition.
This is not the first time Jeep Cherokee PTU systems have come under scrutiny. Multiple earlier recalls reportedly addressed similar transfer-unit and spline-failure issues in prior Cherokee model years.
Some automotive publications have described the issue as part of a broader, long-running drivetrain reliability problem affecting the Cherokee platform.
Recall/TSB
According to recall reports:
Recall population: approximately 61,700 vehicles
Affected vehicles: certain 2019–2023 Jeep Cherokee SUVs
NHTSA Recall ID: 26V290
Component: Power Transfer Unit (PTU)
Jeep and Stellantis reportedly notified dealers first, with interim owner notifications expected beginning in June 2026. However, reports indicate that a final repair remedy may still be under development.
That “no remedy yet available” situation can become especially frustrating for owners who continue driving vehicles with unresolved drivetrain concerns.
Symptoms
Owners reporting PTU-related problems in Jeep Cherokees have allegedly experienced:
“Service 4WD” dashboard warnings
Clunking or grinding noises
Vibrations during acceleration
Jerking or hesitation
Loss of propulsion
Difficulty shifting into or remaining in park
Unexpected vehicle movement after parking
AWD system malfunction warnings
Some drivers may notice symptoms intermittently before a complete PTU failure occurs.
How to Proceed
Document Issues: Keep detailed records of all repairs and communications with the manufacturer. While at the dealership, ensure that all of your complaints are noted in the work order that you receive when you first drop off your vehicle.
Reasonable Number of Repair Attempts: While the law doesn't specify an exact number, generally, if the same problem persists after four or more repair attempts, or if the vehicle is out of service for more than 30 days cumulatively, it may qualify as a "lemon."
Monitor Symptoms: Any new drivetrain noises, warning lights, loss of power, or rollaway concerns should be taken seriously. Stop driving immediately if the vehicle becomes unsafe and notify the dealership.
Contact Valero Law: If repairs fail, or if you experience repeated PTU or drivetrain issues, you may be entitled to relief under California law. Remedies can include a repurchase of your vehicle or a cash settlement.
