Ford Bronco Hardtop Roof Recall Issued for Cracking and Delamination Problems
Ford has issued another safety recall affecting the 2021–2022 Ford Bronco, this time involving the vehicle’s removable Molded-In-Color (“MIC”) hardtop roof panels. According to Ford, certain Bronco hardtops may crack, delaminate, and potentially detach while driving. The recall affects more than 16,000 Broncos equipped with factory MIC hardtops on both 3-door and 5-door models.
For many Bronco owners, hardtop problems are nothing new. Since the Bronco’s relaunch in 2021, owners have reported roof bubbling, cosmetic deterioration, cracking, water intrusion, and excessive wind noise. This latest recall escalates those concerns into a formal safety issue because portions of the roof may separate from the vehicle while driving.
What’s the Problem?
Ford says the Bronco hardtop roof panels may have been improperly manufactured by supplier Webasto. The recall involves the outer layer of the roof panel, which can crack or delaminate over time due to environmental exposure and weather conditions.
According to Ford, once cracking or delamination begins, portions of the roof panel could eventually detach from the vehicle. Detached roof material can become a road hazard and increase the risk of a crash for surrounding drivers.
The recall applies only to Broncos equipped with the MIC hardtop roof option. Painted modular tops are reportedly not included in this recall.
Allegations
Bronco owners have complained for years about roof quality issues on early production models. Common complaints include:
Roof panels developing a “honeycomb” or bubbled appearance
Visible cracking around panel edges
Delamination of exterior surfaces
Water leaks during rain or washing
Excessive wind noise
Roof panel warping or discoloration
Ford previously addressed some of these complaints through technical service efforts and roof replacements, but many owners continued reporting problems long after repairs were completed.
This latest recall suggests Ford now recognizes that some roof defects may create a genuine safety hazard.
Recall / TSB
Ford’s recall reportedly affects approximately 16,000 model year 2021–2022 Ford Broncos equipped with MIC hardtops.
According to the recall:
The exterior roof skin may crack or delaminate
Roof material could separate from the vehicle
Dealers will inspect the hardtop roof panels
Roofs showing cracks or delamination will be replaced
Ford says initial owner notification letters are expected to be mailed between May 27 and May 29, 2026. A second round of notices is expected once replacement parts and repair procedures become fully available, which Ford estimates could occur around November 2026.
Ford’s recall number for this issue is reportedly 26S32.
Symptoms
Bronco owners experiencing hardtop issues may notice:
Cracks forming in the roof exterior
Bubbling or separation of roof material
Excessive wind noise while driving
Water intrusion or leaking
Roof panel looseness
Visible delamination near seams or edges
Pieces of roof trim lifting or separating
Owners who notice worsening roof damage should document the condition immediately and contact a Ford dealer.
How to Proceed
Document Issues: Keep detailed records of all repairs and communications with the manufacturer. While at the dealership, ensure that all of your complaints are noted in the work order that you receive when you first drop off your vehicle.
Reasonable Number of Repair Attempts: While the law doesn't specify an exact number, generally, if the same problem persists after four or more repair attempts, or if the vehicle is out of service for more than 30 days cumulatively, it may qualify as a "lemon."
Monitor Symptoms: Any new roof cracking, separation, water intrusion, or excessive wind noise should be reported immediately to the dealership.
Contact Valero Law: If repairs fail, or if you experience repeated issues, you may be entitled to relief under California law. Remedies can include a repurchase of your defective vehicle or a cash settlement.
