2016-2018 Honda Civic Oil Dilution Warranty Extension

Honda is extending the powertrain warranty for the 2016-18 Honda Civic and 2017-18 CRV equipped with the turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine.

Consumer Reports first brought up the issue, noting that it is caused by gasoline from the cylinders not being fully burned and contaminating the engine oil, which could lower its effective lubrication and cause engine wear over time. The warranty extension covers repairs for the potential engine wear and extends the five-year/50,000-mile powertrain warranty to six years and unlimited mileage. That Consumer Reports article can be accessed here.

Here is the link to the NHTSA summary, paraphrased below:

This warranty extension addresses concerns related to engine oil dilution due to various control unit software threshold settings and possible camshaft and rocker arm failures. Depending on driving behavior, some vehicles may experience lack of power, which may cause the MIL to come on with DTC P0300 (random misfire detected), P0301 (No. 1 cylinder misfire detected), P0302 (No.2 cylinder misfire detected), P0303 (No. 3 cylinder misfire detected), P0304 (No. 4 cylinder misfire detected), or P0172 (fuel system too rich) or a whirling noise from the engine.

American Honda expects to begin customer notifications by the middle of May 2019.
