GM recalls 1.2M pickups, SUVs for power steering problem

GMis recalling more than one million pickup trucks and SUV’s in the U.S. for a steering defect

The defect has been linked to 30 crashes and two injuries. The trucks can lose their electronically controlled power steering momentarily before it suddenly comes back on, causing the driver to have difficulty steering, GM said in a filing to federal safety regulators. The flaw causes drivers to lose control especially at slower speeds.

A GM spokesman said the company is aware of 30 accidents and two injuries but no fatalities.

GM said the defect is caused by a software problem in the electronic-power-steering module. Dealers will update the software to fix the problem for free.

The recall consists of:

  • 2015 Chevrolet Silverado

  • 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 pickups

  • 2015 Chevy Tahoe

  • 2015 Chevy Suburban

  • 2015 Cadillac Escalade

  • 2015 GMC Yukon SUVs.
