NHTSA Opens Investigation into Nissan Versa Engine Stalling - Lemon Alert

A government inquiry has been sparked by stalling incidents in Nissan Versa automobiles with manual (manual transmission vehicles are still sold!) transmissions, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Twenty complaints and numerous field reports of 2022–2024 Nissan Versa vehicles with manual gearboxes stalling unexpectedly while traveling on freeways or in urban traffic have been submitted to the Office of Defects Investigation. The Nissan Versa vehicles stall or enter limp mode, which reduces the amount of torque available to propel or accelerate the vehicles, according to the ODI Resume. Among other things, several complaints claim that releasing the clutch too quickly causes the car to stall.

The limp mode or stalling occurs without warning. Many of the complaints allege that they cannot maintain a speed above 30 miles per hour or accelerate to avoid potential road hazards.

The investigation is currently in the preliminary evaluation phase. The NHTSA Investigation is assessing the scope, frequency, cause and potential consequences of the Nissan Versa stalling events. These investigations can determine if certain vehicle populations ultimately need to be recalled.

Summary

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 20 complaints and multiple field reports describing reduced power (limp mode) following a vehicle stall in 2022-2024 MY Nissan Versa vehicles equipped with a manual/standard transmission. The complaints allege that if the vehicle stalls, resulting from releasing the clutch too fast (or for other reasons), the vehicle goes into the limp mode resulting in limited torque available to move, or accelerate the vehicle. This limp mode occurs without prior warning and can occur while driving on the highway, or in city traffic. Several of the complaints allege not being able to maintain vehicle speed above 30 MPH or accelerate to avoid a potential hazard.

This Preliminary Evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency, root cause(s) and consequences of these reduced power incidents.  Additionally, ODI may expand the scope of the subject population during the investigation, if needed.
