Nissan recalls more than 850,000 Sentras over brake light defect

About a month ago we noted that Nissan was issuing a recall for certain model year Pathfinders due to the fact the brake lights may intermittently stay on, even if the brake pedal isn’t depressed.

Now there is a recall saying that PUSHING the brake pedal doesn’t cause the brake lights to turn on (we’ve gone full circle here, folks).

Nissan said they’re recalling more than 800,000 Nissan Sentra’s over a defect that may prevent the brake lights from illuminating, which could increase the risk of a crash.

The affected vehicles — totaling 807,376 units in the U.S.— are 2016-19 model-year Sentras. Nissan said it is not aware of any accidents related to this issue.

Nissan says the brake-light switch may become contaminated with off-gassing from silicon-based grease used in neighboring components. Silicon dioxide buildup may lead to open circuit issues, preventing the circuit from closing and the brake lights from illuminating.

The recall documents filed with NTHSA can be accessed here.
