FCA recalls 210,000 new Jeeps and Dodges due to a brake issue

A reduction of braking performance can increase the risk of a crash.

NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V523000

Manufacturer Chrysler (FCA US LLC)

Components SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC

Potential Number of Units Affected 154,335

Summary

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Dodge Grand Caravan and Jeep Compass, 2018 Dodge Journey, and 2019 Jeep Cherokee vehicles. The rear brake caliper pistons on these vehicles may have an insufficient coating causing gas pockets to form, potentially reducing rear brake performance.

Remedy

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will bleed the vehicle's brake system, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin September 28, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is U86.

2004-2007 Jeep Liberty Control Arm Recall

Jeep issued a recall for over 325,000 2004-2007 Liberty SUVs due to faulty equipment.

The problem lies in a flaw in the rear lower control arms which may let water build up inside the components and cause corrosion and cracks. If that were to happen, driver control may be undermined.

Affected vehicles include 239,904 model years 2004 to 2007 Jeep Liberty SUVs in the U.S., along with 49,712 in Mexico and another 36,199 outside the NAFTA region.

However, the automaker recalled only vehicles located in "salt belt states" due to the risk of corrosion from road salt used in winter months. SUVs located outside certain states weren't included in the recall.

The 2004-2007 Libertys use three-link rear suspension systems with rear lower control arms that constrain the rear axles in the aft direction. This will cause drivers rear suspension stability problems when the control arms fracture.

The recall is expected to begin June 20, 2018. Vehicles that were included in the previous recall are not included in this one.

If you own a 2004-2007 Jeep Liberty and have concerns about the control arms, call Chrysler at 800-853-1403 and ask about recall number U38.

NHTSA documents can be accessed here regarding the recall.

2017 Jeep Renegade Oil Pump Housing Recall

Last February I wrote about transmission problems in certain 2014-2015 Jeep Renegades.  Hot on the heels of that, FCA / Chrysler has announced a recall for the 2017 Jeep Renegade for an 'engine stall' condition.   From the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:

Oil Pump Housing Crack may Cause Engine Stall

An engine stall can increase the risk of a crash.

NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V131000

Manufacturer Chrysler (FCA US LLC)

Components ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

Summary

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2017 Jeep Renegade vehicles equipped with a 2.4L engine. These vehicles may be equipped with a cracked oil pump housing/balance shaft module (BSM), which can cause the oil pump to fail and the engine to stall.

Remedy

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the oil pump for its production information, and replace the BSM as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin April 13, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is U18.

Jeep Renegade and Cherokee Transmission Problems

After some research, it appears that there have been more than a few complaints regarding Jeep and Chrysler vehicles equipped with ZF 9HP Automatic Transmissions ("9-speed transmissions"), These vehicles include, but are not limited to, the following Jeep and Chrysler models:

  • 2014-2015 Jeep Cherokee
  • 2015 Chrysler 200
  • 2015 Jeep Renegade.

Complaints revolve around the fact the vehicles contain defects that cause rough, delayed, or sudden shifting or failure to shift; grinding or other loud noises during shifting; harsh engagement of gears; sudden or harsh accelerations/decelerations; sudden loss of power; premature transmission wear; and potentially, transmission failure

Chrysler Pacifica Class Action Lawsuit Filed

A few weeks ago I wrote about NHTSA beginning a investigation into the 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica with persistent engine stalling and now a class action lawsuit was recently filed.

The complaint alleges the 2017 and 2018 Chrysler Pacifica vehicles equipped with a 3.6-liter V6 engine and 9-speed 948TE automatic transmissions contain a design defect that causes the vehicles to stall at high speeds without warning.

While the issue here lies with engine stalling, the 948TE transmission in Pacificas has proven to be quite troublesome and is featured in Acura, Fiat, Honda, Jeep, and Dodge Ram vehicles.

A copy of the complaint can be found here.

The Chrysler Pacifica engine stall lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California - Ryan and Sarah Wildin, et al., v. FCA US, LLC. 3:17-cv-02594.

Another Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee Recall (Brakes)

Fiat Chrysler Auto (FCA) issued another huge recall on a series of vehicles it already issued a recall on.  No word yet on how long it'll take FCA to get these components in stock, especially given FCA's track record of not having recall components in stock and getting fined by NHTSA for that.  In pertinent part, the Detroit Free Press says [bold font edits are mine]:

Fiat Chrysler announced it is recalling more than 700,000 Jeep and Dodge sport-utility vehicles to resolve a potential problem with the vehicles’ brakes that can make it difficult to stop.

The action affects Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Durangos from model years 2011–14 with about 646,000 of those vehicles in the U.S.

The company said a mistake installing the brake-booster shields may allow water intrusion, which can cause corrosion and freezing, impacting the functionality of the brakes. Signs of a problem include excessive brake-pedal firmness, activations of the anti-lock brakes and illumination of a warning light.

It isn’t the first time FCA has tried to resolve the problem. In fact, the installation of the shields was supposed to eliminate the issue in 2014. However, some weren’t installed correctly the company discovered reviewing warranty data.

New 2012-2017 Jeep Wrangler Radiator Class Action

A new automobile class action case was filed in New York regarding 2012-2017 Jeep Wrangler vehicles titled Malizia et. al. v. FCA US, LLC.  In this class action, plaintiffs allege that the Class Vehicles have a systemic heater defect that causes premature failure of the cooling system.

According to the Jeep class action, Fiat Chrysler uses two different methods (sand-casting and die-casting) to manufacture components of Jeep Wrangler’s Pentastar engines. Combining these two components causes sand to build-up in the radiator, leading to failure of other systems.  Fiat Chrysler has already issued a warranty extension (x56) for certain Pentastar engines in 2014 due to issues with those engines.  That warranty extension is accessible here.

The plaintiffs seek to represent a nationwide Class of consumers who purchased or leased a 2012-2017 Jeep Wrangler, as well as a New York subclass for violations of state law. The Jeep class action alleges that Fiat Chrysler breached express and implied warranties and was negligent in allowing the defective components into their vehicles.
