General Motors Discontinues Chevy Sonic

Chevrolet and Ford are discontinuing the Ford Fiesta, Ford Taurus, while Chevrolet is stopping production of the Chevrolet Sonic.  Analysts suspect that it is due to consumers moving more towards SUV and Crossover type vehicles given gas prices are somewhat low right now.  I suspect it may be due to the issues that these vehicles have had.  For example, Sonic owners have complained about the engine, transmission and starter conditions for quite some time.  Those are accessible here.   Car Complaints was also quick to pick up on these complaints as well.

Here is a link to the NBC article and snippet below:

Both Ford and GM plan to stop making three cars for the U.S. market, as they continue to shift their focus toward popular and high-margin SUVs and trucks, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday, citing sources.

General Motors will stop making the small Chevrolet Sonic car, possibly by the end of the year, the Journal reported. Ford plans to stop selling the comparable subcompact Fiesta in the U.S. and discontinue the larger Taurus sedan, once the best-selling car in the U.S.

Chevrolet declined to comment.

Ford and the problematic MyFordTouch System

Consumer Reports has written extensively here  and also here on Ford's problematic MyFordTouch / Sync system.  From irresponsive controls, random shutdowns, rear camera failure, and volume control failure, it's introduction has been such a mess that Ford has issued a warranty extension for the MyFord Touch and Sync system.  A class action was filed a few years ago, but still has not settled.

Titled "12M02 – Warranty Extension Covering Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) Software And Hardware", it gives consumers an additional two years from the date of original purchase.  Coupled with the original express warranty (3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first), consumers have a total of 5 years of warranty on the MyFord Touch.

As an example, if you purchased a 2013 Ford Focus on 12/1/2012, then with this warranty extension, the MyFord Touch warranty would lapse on 12/1/2017.

Not too shabby, but it doeesn't repair some of the inherent problems with the MyFord Touch system.  The following vehicles are included in the warranty extension:

  • 2011-2014 Ford Edge
  • 2011-2014 Ford Explorer
  • 2011-2014 Lincoln MKX
  • 2012-2014 Ford Focus
  • 2013-2014 Ford C-MAX
  • 2013-2014 Ford Escape
  • 2013-2014 Ford F-150
  • 2013-2014 Ford Flex
  • 2013-2014 Ford Fusion
  • 2013-2014 Lincoln MKS
  • 2013-2014 Lincoln MKT
  • 2013-2014 Ford Taurus
  • 2014 Ford Fiesta
  • 2014 Transit Connect

Notice that went out to Ford owners can be found here as well.
